Although it isn't a well publicized fact, Paris is the second largest European city; the river it straddles, the Seine, also has two islands, situated in the oldest part of the city. Paris short stays are primarily taken by couples wanting a romantic weekend; it is almost guaranteed that a second, longer stay will be required.
It is renowned for its wonderful Gothic inspired buildings and street markets; the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre must not go unmentioned. Traveling through the city of Paris can be very enjoyable; the Metro underground system is easy to understand, efficient and reaches everywhere even the most enthusiastic tourist would want to visit.
At almost 1,000 feet high, the Eiffel Tower is an impressive sight; it can be seen from any point within the city and the superb views just can't be matched by those looking at it from the ground. Illuminated at night it dominates the city's skyline; guided tours add to the thrill as you get to peek into history on how it was constructed.
If you plan on spending some of your traveler's checks in Paris, then a trip down the Champs Elysees is an essential part of a trip; it will present you with many famous designer shops and good restaurants. This avenue may be select but it attracts large numbers of visitors daily; most of the five star hotels are located here but more affordable hotels can be found further out.
This city is also the home to the renowned Louvre Museum; it holds in excess of 300,000 pieces of art, which cannot possibly be seen in a single visit. Even on a short stay in Paris, this is a an art lovers paradise; the Venus de Milo is displayed here and of course the Mona Lisa. Many well known artists spent years of their lives in Paris; many of whom left large collections of their paintings here like Monet and Picasso.
Another famous Paris attraction is The Arc de Triomphe which was built within the first decade of the nineteenth century; engraved with the names of generals that commanded his troops, it has become a popular photo spot for tourists visiting Paris. It also features an observatory to take in surrounding views; it is located in Place Charles de Gaulle where twelve of the city's main avenues start, including Avenue de Champs Elysees.
Of course this article can only give a small sample places to visit; but these should certainly not to be missed because many offer regular guided tours, some at little or no charge at all. Unfortunately, short stays in Paris can be demanding on visitors; anything that's missed will have to take a rain check.
